In 1904, it introduced its first futures contracts. It was, and remains, Canada's only commodity futures exchange. It also formerly operated the Canadian Financial Futures Market. Barley futures were around in one form or another, dating back to the original Winnipeg Grain Exchange, since 1904, but had not seen any trade since 2016. On the recommendation of the contract committee, ICE Futures Canada announced the decision to delist the three grain contracts in a notice Wednesday to participants. Winnipeg futures prices are watched around the world. Winnipeg is seen as “the new Chicago,” home to a booming grain industry as pioneers open tens of millions of acres across Western Canada. Over the past few months, WCE’s western barley futures prices have been trending upward. The nearby futures price has ranged from a low of $109.90/tonne on September 28, 2000 to a recent high of $132.70/tonne on November 22, 2000.

In a notice to market participants, the Winnipeg-based exchange said its futures and options contracts for the three crops would be de-listed as of trading day October 26, 2017. In reality, the contracts had been dead for a while. Barley was the last of the three contracts to have any open interest, in late 2016.

The ICE contract has delivery months of March, May, July, October and December.
